it finally happened - my first flood

Post by blennieluvr on Mon May 20, 2013 6:52 pm

Last eve after my water change, the display kept filling and wasn't draining into the sump. We shut 'er off quick when it started to spill over and found what we thought to be the problem. There was salt creep building up in a small hole on the overflow plumbing. We being, Jason. I would not have had a clue! This a.m., we woke up to water dripping into the basement from above! I was imagining a dry tank with stinky dead corals as I ran up the stairs. However, we didn't actually lose that much water. I just shut off the return pump for the day and hopefully, we can determine why it's continuing to happen this eve and get it all up and running again. I think last eve we made things better but not exactly fixed so it was slowly filling up through the night. I can see why people would get discouraged when something like this happens. I'm not happy about the saltwater in my new carpet and water seeping through my wood floors!

It turns out we just loosened up some of the plumbing below when we dealt with the overflowing display right after my water change. Things have been fine now for a day and a half. It will take some time before I don't worry about it though!

Jim, how's the real flooding going over there? I hear there's a threat of flooding in Red River Valley again.

Yeah there's a few smaller towns being threatened but we are good.

Been there too Cammie, but my issue was a stupid suicidal nerite snail decided to get stuck in my drain plumbing where it converted from PVC to flex. I no longer use vinyl flex for drains for this reason...

Hope the issue is fixed.

By the way, After the second time, I have yet to stop worrying about a flood. If I hear an odd water noise at night I am up and out of bed so quickly.

Do you have any of those water detectors for floors? I have a few spares if you need one. Basically if it gets wet it sets off a siren like a smoke detector. Won't solve an issue, but it helps with early detection.

I've never even heard of such a thing. Very cool idea!

Our new house has plumbing just to the side of the master bedroom and one night, I jumped clear out of bed from a dead sleep on the run to fix the water problem and that was BEFORE the flood issue! LOL

I'll bring you a detector. They are small and easy to use, just add batteries.

What a bummer. I've been in a flood in Oklahoma where my inlaws were 3 feet underwater. I've had several floods with overfilling my inside koi pond, or my freshwater tanks. It is amazing how well our floors recover. Sorry.

A year later, another flood but unrelated to issue from last time.  It was still a plumbing thing though.

The good news, my son was home to call me and let me know water was dripping into the basement from above.  I was able to get home before the return pump ran dry.

The bad news, my full top-off reservoir dumped into the tank so hopefully, the salinity swing doesn't cause enough stress for losses.  Time will tell. And, I hope our house can take another saltwater dose.  I am drying the carpet with a couple of fans after using every towel I could find to sop up what I could and will rent a carpet cleaner to go over the area with later.  But, what to do with what's in between the carpet and the the ceiling below?  Sad

Susan and Frank are helping me make water so I can hopefully get the tank running again in just a few hours. So far, I have just powerheads running in the display tank.

So far, all seems to have fared well other than the carpet and false ceiling downstairs.  I think the hubby and I will have to take the tiles down in said ceiling and see how things look under the aquarium from beneath.  As for livestock though, no losses! In fact, all the critters seem like business as usual.
