What's going on? Tank talk!

Post by blennieluvr on Tue May 06, 2014 10:22 am

What are you all doing with your tanks lately? It's so quiet on our forum, I wonder if any of us are still in this hobby. I know what most of you are doing but could you please share here so other people know too? That's how we learn from each other. I'll post my updates in my build threads.

I'm with you Blennieluvr, I wish we had more chit chat.  For myself I am ramping up the number
Of water changes I do.  Not big ones but smaller ones twice a week.
Since my 40 is over loaded with fish.  When I started up I could grow mushrooms
And zoos like no body's business but lately they are really struggling.  By
Recently I mean the last year.
Also I continue working on getting the plumbing done on a 58.  I am home
On medical leave for a few weeks so I am going to use this time to do those
things I'm usually to tired to do after work.  Thanks Doc!
Oh, a few of us, two actually, are planning to attend MACNA! Whoop whoop!
Jealous yet?

Still fighting the algae fight in the 24 gallon, 7.5 gallon is doing fine, making plans for the upgrade. Oh I got a new led light over the 24 too. It's a little adjustable so having fun playing with that.

Hi,
Have you tried turning off the lights for awhile on the algae? I have cut down my light time from 12 hours to about 6 hours. It really took care of my issues. Even my thick layer of the black slimy stuff now just gets vacuumed off when I do a water change. The other algae has been reduced a great deal. Let us know if you have tried this.

Cutting the light helps a little but I did a few several day blackouts, somewhat effective but not enough to stop it. Plus when I run the tank lights out that much I really lose interest in it altogether. Problem is now it's gone from bad red cyano, to green cyano which seems to be improving but now there's hair algae to boot. Arggghh. I'm not stressing majorly as it's not out of control, just an annoyance thanks to my scrubbing and water changes. Just icky to look at. Right it's probably a combo of new light-on more because it's fun to play with and more feedings with the new shrimp and my feather duster. I'm definitely not helping matters lol.
