Broken bulb in tank

Post by GoodToGo on Thu Jan 22, 2015 9:38 am

Last week we had an incident involving a cat (of course) that resulted in a 48" T5 getting broken into the tank. There was some initial panic as I was concerned about the chemicals in the bulb wiping out the tank. I know there is mercury and who knows what else. We picked the pieces out of the tank and then I changed out the carbon. I thought about a water change but didn't do it. A quick internet search showed similar experiences for others with no reports of die-offs. Everything appears to doing just fine, so it looks as though a broken bulb is no cause for panic.

It was still a pain, I'm sure.  It's hard not to panic when stuff like that happens.  Thanks for sharing your experience in case it happens to another club member and I'm glad there weren't any residual damages.

I also have to say, this is why I don't understand how people can like cats.  LOL
