Refugium sand or not?

Post by seafishinmn on Thu Aug 13, 2009 10:45 am

Do you guys use sand in your refugiums? Or go BB? I'd like to increase the "pods" in my tank as I hardly ever see them...and thought that by adding some sand they'd have better "living conditions". I currently have only some leftover smalll live- rock pieces, a hunk of chaeto and a couple of mangroves.

I don't really have a refugium, I gave up on the cheato since I'm never able to get that crap to grow for some reason but I have some live rock in the sump. no sand because it seems like it would be harder to keep clean and I was afraid of some making it to the pump.

thanks Tiffany. I had thought of that... I suppose that you don't really clean it at all otherwise you'd loose the critturs your're trying to keep (pods etc.).

Maybe I'll get some sand and put an inch layer down.
Brad, what does the mud do? i've heard of it but never seen it... Is it a "loose" substrate, or is is "clay-like"?

Myself I ran fuges for Many many years running rubble,Sand, Sand/ mud mix. and Last year I went To a BB Fuge and will never go back to substance in my fuge for one I usually throw some small rock pieces in so my pods have breeding and hiding places. and when I'm doing a water change I just move my rock pile over to another corner and suck up all the junk under it and between the cheato and XL rubble thats all pods and others need for hiding and breeding.
And I have not seen any change in population use or not using Substance, but over the many sumps I've tooken down and seen all that debris just sitting there and storing Lbs of nutrient enriched debris and above it is my Cheato working as a Nutrient exporter,, well I figured get rid of the debris trap and my cheato will export more water coming threw from the main tank.

I wouldn't. It will be easier to remove detritus from the sump without it in there.
